Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate K V Viswanathan have been sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court, bringing the total number of SC judges to 34. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud. The Supreme Court of India had a sanctioned judge strength of 34, but was reduced to 32 following the retirement of two judges, Dinesh Maheshwari and M R Shah. Justice Mishra, the newly appointed judge, was previously the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court and his parent High Court is Chhattisgarh. Senior Advocate K V Viswanathan will become the Chief Justice of India in August 2030, holding the office for around 10 months. His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 16 and approved by the Indian government shortly thereafter. Viswanathan was directly elevated from the Bar to become a judge.
