Victims of the ongoing strife in Manipur are arriving in Calcutta on flights from Imphal. Many of them have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and some are even wearing clothes that are soaked in blood and covered in dirt. This highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for aid and support for those affected. Manggoulal, a 30-year-old visitor to Manipur with his wife and mother-in-law, shared an account of their trip on Monday. For privacy reasons, their surnames and specific location were not disclosed. On May 3rd around 5pm, a news bulletin alerted us to trouble and we quickly went to buy essentials. Police were urging people to keep their doors shut. At sunset, tear gas shells and gunshots could be heard, and smoke could be seen in the streets.
