Due to heavy rains and hotter-than-normal temperatures in some growing areas, tomato production has been hit, causing a fivefold increase in prices compared to previous years. This year, the impact on prices has been more significant than usual, as tomatoes typically become more expensive during the lean production months of June and July. Tomatoes and onions are crucial ingredients in Indian cuisine and any increase in prices can lead to protests. Political parties in the country have even lost elections due to their inability to control the prices of these two vegetables.
