The trailer for The Kerala Story has been changed on YouTube after initially claiming that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined ISIS. The film now tells the "true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala." Shashi Tharoor, a Kerala MP, previously challenged the original claim, pointing out that the figure was unlikely to be accurate as it would mean that almost all of the state's ISIS recruits were women. The film's director, Rupesh Paul, defended the original figure but altered the trailer. Kerala political parties, both in government and opposition, called for a ban on the film following its original trailer's claims. The Indian Union Muslim league's youth wing offered a reward of ₹1 crore to anyone who could prove that 32,000 Kerala women had joined ISIS.
