US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has begun his China visit in an effort to ease tensions between the two nations. Scheduled to travel to China in January, it is the first Secretary-level visit since 2018, but the trip was postponed after a Chinese surveillance aircraft disrupted communication between the two sides. Blinken's arrival comes amid growing tensions between the US and China, including issues of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Tibet, as well as cyberattacks originating in China and tense rhetoric over Taiwan's sovereignty.
