The Congress's reluctance to solve the 'DK Shivakumar or Siddaramaiah' dilemma in Karnataka has led to new calls from various caste groups for the chief minister post. The All India Veershaiva Mahasabha, which represents the Lingayat community, has sought the top post in Karnataka state citing that 34 of newly-elected Congress MLAs are Lingayats. The Lingayat vote swing has been identified as a key factor in the Congress party's recent victory in the state, once a key support base of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Lingayats are estimated to comprise 17% of the state's population and are seen as politically influential. Dalit community supporters held a demonstration in Tumkur demanding that veteran Congress leader G Parameshwara be chosen for the Chief Minister post.
