The Indian Supreme Court has prevented the Gujarat government from promoting 68 judicial officers to district judges while a case challenging the move is still ongoing. The court was unhappy the state had proceeded with the promotions despite the outstanding challenge. The Gujarat government's decision to promote three IPS officers has been temporarily stayed by the Supreme Court. The Gujarat High Court's recommendation to promote the officers and the state's notification based on this were put on hold by a bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar. This decision was made following a plea challenging the Gujarat High Court's recommendation. Harish Hasmukh Bhai Varma, who convicted Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case earlier this year, is among the 68 judicial officers promoted to the district judge cadre in Gujarat.
