Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, was arrested in the Czech Republic on June 30, 2023, for allegedly attempting to hire an assassin to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist leader based in New York City. Gupta allegedly offered $100,000 to the assassin for Pannun's murder. The plot was foiled by US authorities after they received a tip-off. Gupta was extradited to the United States and charged with murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
