Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to assess the situation after clashes in the region in connection to a mass rally held by tribal groups. A curfew has been imposed in most districts of Manipur after a rally organized by the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur turned violent. Mobile internet services have also been suspended in the entire state for five days from Tuesday. A tribal group in Manipur was protesting against the demand for inclusion of the state's Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category following a Manipur High Court directive. The move has reignited an old ethnic divide in the state between the Meitei community and the tribal groups.
