Law Commission to revisit Uniform Civil Code

The Congress party has criticized the Law Commission's decision to reconsider the Uniform Civil Code, stating that it represents the Modi government's desperation to continue its agenda of polarization and diversion. The Congress party pointed out that the Law Commission had already released a paper on the issue in August 2018, and questioned the need for a revisit. The Law Commission plans to review the Uniform Civil Code despite stating in August 2018 that it was "neither necessary nor desirable at this stage". The Commission will examine the potential for a Uniform Civil Code, which would replace differing personal laws that allow for differing treatment of individuals based on gender and religion.
