Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, defended Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury after the latter was suspended from the Lok Sabha for claiming that "Nirav" means "quiet" in Hindi while discussing the PNB bank scam in the house. Kharge stated that Chowdhury had not said anything disrespectful and that he was being unfairly targeted by the ruling party. The suspension has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been suspended from the Indian parliament pending an investigation into his conduct by the privileges committee.
