Gujarat High Court refused to stay at a conviction of Rahul Gandhi

The Gujarat High Court has rejected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's request for a stay of his conviction and two-year prison term issued by a Magistrate court in a criminal defamation case. Gandhi was sentenced for his comments that "All thieves have Modi surname." Justice Hemant Prachchhak refused the stay in a single-judge ruling. The Surat sessions court has dismissed Rahul Gandhi's plea for suspension of his conviction by the Magistrate court. The court held that Gandhi's disqualification would not result in irreparable or irreversible loss to him. The Congress leader was convicted in a criminal defamation case filed by a senior BJP leader.
