The Indian government has informed the Supreme Court that it will assemble a cabinet panel for same-sex couples. The committee will be headed by the cabinet secretary and tasked with addressing the "human concerns" of homosexual couples without giving legal recognition to their relationships as a marriage. The Indian government is "positive" about recognizing same-sex marriages, but it would need the coordination of multiple ministries, according to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Speaking to a Constitution bench hearing petitions on the issue, Mehta said there were "genuine human concerns" to consider, and a committee would be formed to help address the matter. Same-sex marriage remains illegal in India, although homosexuality was decriminalized in 2018.
