Former lawmaker Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim were shot dead while handcuffed and in police custody on Saturday in Uttar Pradesh. Their deaths exemplify the collapse of the rule of law in the region. The disturbing visuals of the killings highlight the rampant lawlessness that exists in parts of India despite increased scrutiny from human rights groups. The Court rejected a plea made by the accused father whose son was allegedly killed in a police encounter in Jhansi. The father and son were both accused in the murder of a political rival in February. The father is a former leader of the Samajwadi Party.
